In 1966 the counterculture that had been percolating through the Beat culture for over a decade suddenly spilled over into teenagers all across America. The first indication a new culture was emerging was the proliferation of garage bands, which were soon populated by longhaired “freaks,” very few of whom identified as hippies until much later after the Woodstock festival solidified the spiritual foundation of the culture.
